May, 2013 Micklewright – Deming Extravaganza

In May, the Silicon Valley Section of ASQ is privileged to offer two events with Mike Micklewright. Mr. Micklewright is a dynamic international speaker, author, business and quality consultant, trainer, and convincing Dr. Deming impersonator.
Wednesday, May 15, 2013, 5:30PM-8:30PM - regularly scheduled dinner forum
Dr. Deming's Red Bead Experiment
In 1986, Dr. W Edwards Deming served as a consultant to a rubber manufacturing firm in Ohio. He held several week-long seminars for employers and suppliers of the company. Of the many examples used during those seminars, an exercise called the “Red Bead Experiment” was used as a basis to spur change in the company. This experiment depicts one of the main tenets of Quality Improvement: a flawed system is the culprit for poor quality outcomes, not willing employees.
Mike channels Dr. Deming for this presentation, down to the physical appearance and voice, and will be soliciting audience members to participate in the Red Bead Experiment.
Come at 5:30PM to hear the section futurist, Ramesh Konda, speak on the topic "Data Quality continues to be a challenge." The lack of procedures, ineffective processes, and the vast amount of data stored: financial, health, transactional, has led to inaccurate data. The consequences have included fraud, defective, and fragmented data.

On Thursday, May 16, 2013, a two part workshop on the subject of Lean
8AM-Noon: Creating Leaner QMS Documentation
“I can’t find our requirements!” “There’s just too many documents in this company!”
“No one’s going to read this procedure; it's too darn long!”
Have you found yourself saying similar things? Many Quality Management Systems grow to the point of just being non-user-friendly, overly complex, cumbersome, and lengthy. By applying the tools and concepts of Lean and waste elimination, this workshop will show how to transform a company's documentation system into one that is much more effective and valuable.
The overall length of many company documentation systems has been decreased by 50 - 80% in many companies while still maintaining all of the important content. What results is a Lean Quality System, including a two-page Quality Manual. What is eliminated is the junk, or the wasteful content that does not add value to the system, including the abundance of redundancies. By using 5S, Red Tags, TWI, and Value Streams, we will show how the QMS can be more effective and efficient. Morning: $170 - includes lunch
For unemployed/retired/students, we offer a reduced (-40%) fee - please contact the program organizer for the promotion code for registration.

1PM-5PM: Lean + QMS = Business Management System
ISO 9001, ISO 13485, and the other related industry specific Quality management system standards provide us “what” we have to do, not how we should do it. Lean enterprise offers us the tools and cultural elements of how we could structure our systems to greatly improve the effectiveness of our business management systems.
When asked, most Lean experts agree that one of the most difficult parts of “Lean” is sustaining the improvements that have been made. And yet, an ISO Based Quality Management System (QMS) is all about an organization ensuring the “effective planning, operation, and control of its processes”.
By fully integrating Lean into the Quality Management System, an organization can develop and deploy a much more effective Business Management System while reducing the waste that has been created in redundant systems. It will also add life to a stale quality management system that is perhaps not driving continuous improvement, while adding sustainability to lean improvement efforts.
