The Statistics & Reliability Discussion Group cordially invites you to
attend an outstanding FREE presentation:

TOPIC: Problem Solving TRIZ, HU, and the Beyond
SPEAKER: Dr. John J. Flaig, Ph.D., FASQ

Chair and Moderator: Dr. John Flaig
Assistant Chair: Dr. Don Mintz
Corporate Sponsor: Applied Materials
Sponsor: Mr. Ravi Chandra from Applied Materials

ABSTRACT:

Previously Dr. Flaig gave a very popular talk on Systematic Problem Solving. That presentation covered the commonly used methods for solving problems in rich and data sparse environments. The talk also covered some of the problems with popular tools such as brainstorming, the five why's, cause and effect diagrams, and clever modern tools such as TRIZ.

In this talk John will give a short background on TRIZ and then an extension of TRIZ to a multivariate visual diagramming tool called HU, which is the acronym for Harmful Useful. We will formalize the definition of HU and then show how many formal subjective problem solving systems such as FMEA are really subsets of HU.

Finally, John will propose ways to move from a subject HU approach to an analytic one thus increasing the power of this excellent problem solving methodology.

BIOGRAPHY:

He is Chair of the Statistics and Reliability group and was previously Program Chair for the ASQ's Annual Quality Conference, the Scholarship and Awards program, and the Education program for the ASQ. His industry experience spans more than forty years where he was employed in everything from small startup operations to some of the largest companies in the world such as Apple, Applied Materials, and Hewlett-Packard. He currently acts as Analytics Advisor to 1factory, and as VP of Analytics and Professional Services for ActiveMiner, two small startup companies.

Dr. Flaig has published over twenty peer reviewed research papers in areas such as process capability analysis, adaptive control charts, factor effects analysis, optimal resource allocation, and supplier management. He was formerly a member of the Editorial Board of Quality Engineering a journal of the ASQ, and Associate Editor of Quality Technology and Quantitative Management a journal of the International Chinese Association of Quantitative Management.

John has given lectures and seminars in Europe, Asia and throughout the United States. His special interests are in statistical process control, process capability analysis, supplier management, design of experiments, and process optimization.
