1. The Eberhart Memorial Scholarship PDF Print E-mail

For: Outstanding academic, community, and ethical leadership

Purpose: To enable students who have exhibited exceptional ability and diligence to pursue their academic interests for the betterment of the individual and society.

Award: $1000

Eligibility: Any enrolled Graduate or Undergraduate student is eligible. Schools (Stanford, SJSU, SCU, UCSC, CSUEB, DeAnza College, and West Valley College)

Criteria: School recommendation (1 to 2 pages) submitted by May 1 to Scholarship and Awards Chair ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) detailing academic performance, community service, and personal need.

Awards Presentation: 3rd Wed of each month, the winners must attend a meeting to receive the award

 
2. The Flaig Prize for Best Quality Paper PDF Print E-mail

For: The best student paper on a Quality related subject

Purpose: To encourage future leaders in business, engineering and science to examine the fundamental role Quality plays in advancing society in many arenas, including management, science, engineering, statistics, products, and services.

Awards: 1st $1000, 2nd $500, and 3rd $250

Eligibility: Any enrolled Graduate or Undergraduate student is eligible. Schools (Stanford, SJSU, SCU, UCSC, CSUEB, DeAnza College, and West Valley College)

Criteria: Paper submitted to Scholarship and Awards Chair ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and evaluated by the review committee. Outline due by March 15 and Final Paper by May 1.  See page 2 for details.

Awards Presentation: 3rd Wed in June, all winners must attend. 1st place winner presents their paper. Other winners may be asked to present at a later dinner, tutorial, or discussion group meeting.

 
3. Member Publication Recognition PDF Print E-mail

For: The publication of Quality related papers or articles

Purpose: To recognize the efforts of our members in promoting Quality concepts to the community

Award: A voucher to attend an ASQ Dinner Meeting of your choice for the author and a guest at no charge.

Eligibility: Any current member of the American Society for Quality Section 0613

Criteria: Article must have been published in the previous twelve months and a copy emailed to the Scholarship and Awards Chair ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) with a subject line “ASQ Publication Award”.

Awards Presentation: An award notice will be published in the monthly newsletter with a link to the article on our website. In addition, when the author attends the dinner meeting the Chair will recognize them for their achievement.

 
Flaig Prize Criteria Announcement PDF Print E-mail

The American Society for Quality Silicon Valley Section is sponsoring the Flaig Prize competition for best paper on a Quality related subject by a student.

Prizes: First place $1000, Second place $500, and Third place $250

Purpose: To encourage future leaders in business, engineering and science to examine the fundamental role Quality plays in advancing society in many arenas, including management, science, engineering, statistics, and in products and processes. 

Eligibility: Any enrolled Graduate or Undergraduate student is eligible

Evaluation: Members of the ASQ Executive Committee will evaluate all papers. Winners are required to make a one hour presentation at one of the monthly ASQ dinner meetings held at the Biltmore Hotel in Santa Clara on the third Wednesday of the month between May and November (see www.asq-silicon-valley.org).

Pre-Approval: The paper topic must be pre-approved by Dr. John J. Flaig representing the American Society for Quality (www.asq.org). A thesis or project that has been or will be submitted for a class is acceptable for submission.

Submission Timeline: One page Outline due by March 1, Final Papers due by May 1. Draft and Final Papers must be emailed to Dr. Flaig at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  

Paper Format: 15 to 20 pages, double spaced, 1" margins, 12 point, Times font. Journal article quality standards are expected (i.e., title, author, abstract, key words, references).

Awards Dinner: All entrants will be invited to attend the Quality Awards presentation dinner scheduled for the third Wednesday in June.  The dinner is free to all winners.

Sciences: Design of Experiments, Statistical Process Control, Measurement Systems Analysis, Optimization, Operations Research, Robust Design, Response Surface Design, Software Quality

Engineering: Reliability, Six Sigma, Failure Analysis, FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis, Process Capability Analysis, Calibration, HALT, HASS, Root Cause Analysis, Kaizen, Metrology, Lean Manufacturing
